It's time for pencils, books, and teachers' dirty looks!
With the first day of school upon us, what better time to
reminisce about classic television episodes that deal with the subject? So grab
your freshly sharpened #2 pencils and check out these five old school TV
episodes that celebrate the first day of school.
"Today I Am a Freshman" - "The Brady Bunch" (1972)
Here's the story of an unpopular Brady. Yep, for about five
minutes of her teenage dream of a life, Marcia Brady (Maureen McCormick) isn't
the most popular girl at school. The reason? It's her first day at Westdale
High School and all of her friends are going to Tower High. Fearing she's going
to be a "nobody" in high school, Marcia panics and signs up for every
club that is offered-- even clubs she's not interested in like the super snooty
Boosters club. But don't worry, Marcia eventually finds her place. Just a few
episodes later she gets asked out on a date by Doug Simpson, the Big Man on Campus.
Oh to be that unpopular!
"Pilot" - "Square Pegs" (1982)
Sarah Jessica Parker wasn't always Carrie Bradshaw cool. Waaaay before
her "Sex and the City" days, the actress starred as high school geek
Patty Greene in the short-lived sitcom “Square Pegs.” The school? The
unfortunately named Weemawee High. In this series' pilot episode, Patty and the
rest of her geek squad try to fit in with the cool kids on Day 1 at their new
high school. From the looks of things, it's
going to be a long year.
"Back To School Blues" - "Full House" (1989)
Oh the tween angst! It's the first day of junior high for D.J.
Tanner (Candace Cameron Bure) and she's learning the hard way that she's not in
elementary school anymore. In addition to being called a "scrub" by
the mean girl 8th graders, Deej is humiliated when she realizes
she's wearing the same exact outfit as the school's geekiest teacher! Day 2
means tons of makeup and a sleazy new outfit. Hey, a girl's gotta fit in!
"Tabitha's First Day of School" - "Bewitched" (1972)
There's only one way to deal with a school bully that pulls your
pigtails: Turn him into a frog. At least that's what pint-sized witch Tabitha
does on her first day of school on this supernatural ‘70s sitcom. Looks like
Grandmama Endora has taught her well! Now if she would only zap her dad,
Darrin, back to the first Darrin!
"First Day at School" - "The Cosby Show" (1985)
No one is happier about the first day of school than Cliff
Huxtable (Bill Cosby) and his wife Clair. Except maybe first grader Rudy, who
is so excited that she already packed her tuna fish sandwich in her new lunch
box-- two weeks ago!
