She's definitely not a Disney princess anymore!
Former "Wizards of Waverly Place" star
Selena Gomez is all grown up - and she's got the movie roles to prove it. In
2012, former teen queen traded her Mickey Mouse ears for a role in
"Spring Breakers," a scantily clad, drug-filled romp that was the
complete opposite of her wholesome Disney "brand."
At press conference at
the Toronto Film Festival, Gomez even gave her young tween fans a warning about
the flick: "Don't see it!" she said. Of course, the "Love You
Like a Love Song" singer had to grow up some time, and were are only so many "Ramona and Beezus" movies she could do.
Check out these other child stars and their
first grown up roles.
Miley Cyrus - "LOL"
"Hannah Montana" is soooo 2011!
When Miley Cyrus left her long blonde-haired alter ego behind, she moved on to
more adult behavior on and off the screen. But her first foray into a big girl
role was no laughing matter when she starred in "LOL" opposite Demi
Moore. Miley's character had sex, smoked
pot, and kissed a girl in the racy movie. According to Movieline,
the flick was a flop, raking in a mere $46,500 on its opening weekend.
Haley Joel Osment - "Sassy Pants"
His breakout role in the 1999 movie "The
Sixth Sense" made 10-year-old Haley Joel Osment a star. But he grew up and
played the gay lover of a teen girl’s father -- complete with fake piercings,
tattoos, and shortie shorts -- in the movie "Sassy Pants." Osment
told the New York Post of
his role in the indie flick: "A role like this is such a departure from
what I've done in the past. Every actor sort of leaps at the chance to do
something like that."
Alexa Vega - "Machete Kills"
The former "Spy Kid" cutie starred in
Robert Rodriguez's movie as KillJoy, a heavily made-up, metal bra-wearing
assassin. Alexa Vega told the Hollywood
Reporter, "I've never done anything like this. I'd never felt
comfortable enough…There is something about playing an edgier role. You just
have to focus on what you're making, and I want to test my boundaries. My
characters have always been light, and (KillJoy) is the first role to challenge
that."
Zac Efron - "The Lucky One"
The "High School Musical" star graduated
to way more adult roles! After taking baby steps with flicks
like "17 Again" and "The Lorax," in 2012 Zac Efron got
steamy in the movie "The Lucky One." The actor even told People that
his nude scenes with co-star Taylor Shilling were no biggie. "Filming the
sex scenes was the easiest part of filming," he said.
Vanessa Hudgens - "Spring Breakers"
Her role in “Spring Breakers” was even racier
than Selena Gomez's, but “High School Musical” alum Vanessa Hudgens gave
up her Disney past long before spring break. A Faces magazine
cover story about the actress boldly proclaimed: "I'm going to be
doing movies kids can't watch." And in an interview with The Upcoming,
Hudgens said, "I always wanted to do things that are completely different.
I want people to watch movies and think, "Sh*t, that was Vanessa
Hudgens?" My younger fans, of course, are not going to be able to watch
this. But you need to do what makes you happy…there's always going to be
haters."
