Everybody knows the commercials are half the fun of the
Super Bowl broadcast, especially since the high-dollar spots are known for
their creative casting combos. And amid the athletes and the Clydesdales and
'80s pop culture references, the game day ads sometimes feature iconic TV
reunions.
Last year, Uncle Jesse, Joey and Danny Tanner were back
together (although, apparently they never separated) for a Dannon Oikos yogurt
ad. The "Full House" trio, played by John Stamos Dave Coulier and Bob
Saget, teamed up for the Greek yogurt spot -- Stamos is an old pro at hawking
the stuff -- and the only thing missing was Joey's Bullwinkle impersonation.
(OK, and Uncle Jesse's mullet!) Of course, with the Tanner daughters grown and
gone, three seemed to be too much company for Saget's alter
ego. In the teaser, titled "Big game Tease" he suggested to
his 1990s pals, "Don't you think it's time we all get our own
places?"
The gang continued their "Full House" reunion
tour with an ad that aired during the game. "The Spill" featured
Stamos getting, er, frisky with a female friend, only to be interrupted by his
scrub brush wielding roomies. The tagline: "The problem with friends is
that they're always there for you."
Have mercy! And what the heck happened to Aunt Becky?
You can see the Dannon Oikos ad here:
2014 also marked one of the most buzzed-about sitcom
reunions of all time, when Jerry Seinfeld teamed up with his
"Seinfeld" co-stars Jason Alexander and Wayne Knight for a
Superbowl-size spot for the comedian's web series "Comedians in Cars
Getting Coffee."
The old pals' game day banter took place at their old
haunt, Monk's (OK, so the Tom's Restaurant menus were clearly seen in the
background, but we're still living in the '90s!), where Jerry's Super Bowl
dilemma (he was invited to the Wasserstein's party, George was not) was tested
by his nemesis Newman, who boasted that he, too, was invited to the fete.
Of course, the iconic reunion was one of the worst kept
secrets ever. Ahead of the spot, the New York Daily News
posted pics and video of Seinfeld,
Alexander and show co-creator Larry David filming something at
New York City's Tom's Restaurant, which served as the exterior location for the
gang's favorite hangout in the 1990s sitcom, and production workers even dished
that the reunion at the iconic eatery was for a Super Bowl spot. Still, we'll
take it -- and a big salad.
Check out these other classic TV reunions in Super Bowl ads:
The 1978 TV special "Dean's Martin Celebrity
Roast" for TV legend Betty White featured everyone from "Good Times" star Jimmie Walker to
the roastee's old pal, comedian Abe Vigoda. But who'd have imagined that 32
years later, instead of roasting White, the "Barney Miller" alum
would be tackling her in a Super Bowl commercial? The octogenarians joined
forces for a 2010 Snickers ad, which became one of the most buzzed about game
day ads of all time. The "Hot in Cleveland" star later told Ad Age she credited the commercial for her "hot"
career.
Watch the Snickers ad:
Bugs Bunny and Marvin the Martian go way back -- to the
1948 cartoon short "Haredevil Hare" to be exact -- and the celluloid heroes went on to
star in a bevy of Looney Tunes cartoons that aired on the small screen. In 1993, the animated duo returned to TV for a Super Bowl ad for
Nike Air Jordans, and not only did the spot sell a lot of sneaks (Hare Jordans,
anyone?), it inspired the big screen flick "Space Jam."
